THE BAT
In through the open French window
flew the bat, past my head
as I stood peeing into the river
that flowed beneath the house
which the bat quickly explored, round
the barn-sized living-room,
up the cracked stairs, two flights
to the attic where the kids slept
but they wouldn’t tonight, not while
the bat stayed. So we opened
the skylight, despite the wasp’s nest
on the drainpipe, and I stood
with a glass of local red wine,
calling to the bat, like Dracula,
Lovely creature of the night
come to me, I am your friend,
while it looped the length of the room,
with the kids on the stairs, laughing,
but not coming in. And it stayed
past midnight, till Joan
cupped it in her hands
and carried it downstairs
to the same French window,
where I stood, calling after it,
Lovely creature of the night,
come back, I miss you,
come to me, I am your friend.
erbij. Dus openden we
